Q: I am a license practical nurse, who is looking to start a home base business. Do you have any suggestion. I have been in nursing for eighteen years. There is always going to be a demand in the health care field. I just don't know how or what area to start.

A: Hi Ruby,

With your background as a practical nurse, you might consider targeting the growing elderly population. You could start a home health care agency or an insurance record-keeping service.

Or, have you considered becoming a doula? Doulas are hired to help new mothers recuperate from labor and delivery, and guide them through nursing, diapering, bathing and other baby care basics. The doula concept has really caught on as a substitute for the extended family of the past. For many new mothers, an objective, non-related helper is considerably less stressful than a relative.

For more information, contact the Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association ( http://www.postpartumdoula.com ).

Good luck!
